The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has issued a stern warning to personnel in the command, stressing that unprofessional conduct, including extortion, harassment, human rights abuses, and derogatory behavior, will no longer be tolerated.
Jimoh gave the directive during a strategic lecture attended by Deputy Commissioners of Police, Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, DPOs, Heads of Departments, and Tactical Commanders in the state.
The session, he explained, was aimed at reinforcing the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, on the need for professionalism in policing.
The Police Commissioner reminded officers of their constitutional duty to safeguard lives and uphold the dignity of citizens, insisting that crime prevention must be approached with fairness and respect for human rights.
He cautioned that no Nigerian should be subjected to undue hardship in the course of legitimate police operations.
Jimoh particularly condemned the practice of indiscriminate phone checks on youths along the road, describing it as unlawful and unethical.
He clarified that mobile devices can only be examined within police facilities, and strictly in connection with ongoing investigations where such devices are certified as exhibits.
“Officers must refrain from harassing young people under the guise of phone checks. Such conduct is unacceptable, illegal, and will attract serious sanctions,” the CP warned.
