Amnesty International has condemned the attack on Bargaja village in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, where gunmen killed at least five people and abducted several women and girls in the early hours of Saturday.
In a post on X on Sunday, the human rights organisation said over 40 people were also critically injured by gunfire, while the attackers looted shops and destroyed property.
Amnesty described the incident as another example of the government’s utter failure to protect lives despite repeated promises to end insecurity across the country.
“These attacks deprive people of their right to life, while the survivors are left without their livelihoods,” the group said.
The organisation urged Nigerian authorities to take urgent and concrete steps to guarantee the safety and human rights of citizens, rather than offering empty assurances.
“The government of Nigeria must move swiftly to match their words with serious and concrete action if they are to be taken seriously on their oft-expressed commitment to stop the killings, violence, abductions, and other human rights crimes in several parts of the country,” Amnesty stated.
