The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, has unsealed the headquarters of Ikeja Electric in Lagos after the electricity distribution company complied with remedial measures over consumer rights violations.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Commission’s spokesperson, Ondaje Ijagwu, said the facility was sealed on December 11, 2025, following Ikeja Electric’s failure to comply with a directive from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC.
According to FCCPC, the directive required the company to unbundle a Maximum Demand account into 20 individual accounts for a customer who had reportedly been without electricity supply for more than two and a half years.
Ijagwu noted that Ikeja Electric has now given an undertaking to resolve all consumer complaints referred to it by the Commission within agreed timelines. He warned that any violation of the undertaking would attract renewed and stiffer enforcement actions under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA).
Commenting on the development, the FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Tunji Bello, said the action was taken to enforce compliance with the FCCPA, 2018.
Bello emphasised that the commission’s mandate is to protect consumers and ensure service providers adhere to lawful directives, stressing that enforcement is not an end in itself.
“Where compliance is achieved and credible commitments are made, the Commission will respond appropriately,” he said.
He added that the decision to unseal the headquarters reflects the FCCPC’s balanced regulatory approach, noting that while the commission intervenes decisively where consumer harm persists, it also de-escalates once enforceable compliance is secured.
