The Lagos State Government has cautioned hotels, restaurants, and event venues against cancelling confirmed bookings or inflating prices without valid reasons during the December festivities.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu issued the warning on Monday during an interview with TVC News, stressing that businesses who abandon existing agreements in pursuit of higher-paying customers will face strict sanctions.
“This is unacceptable and will not be allowed in Lagos. If a commitment has been made, especially where deposits or agreements exist, it must be honoured,” the governor said.
Sanwo-Olu warned that such practices undermine public trust and damage Lagos’ reputation as a leading tourism and entertainment hub.
“You are spoiling the name and reputation of our city. Not only are we going to name and shame those doing this, the government will also come really hard on them,” he added.
The governor revealed that the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, in collaboration with the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, LASCOPA, has been fully briefed and placed on alert to take action against offending establishments.
Members of the public who experience cancelled bookings, breached agreements, or sudden price increases are encouraged to report these incidents.
Verified complaints will be thoroughly investigated, and offenders will face the full extent of the law.
Sanwo-Olu noted that the state is already aware of some venues engaging in these practices and has held discussions to ensure such conduct does not recur.
