The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has described the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife by US special forces on Saturday as “a dangerous precedent.”

Guterres made the statement through the UN Spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, on Saturday in New York.

He said the standoff between the United States and Venezuela in recent months, which culminated in Saturday’s reported capture of Maduro, is deeply alarming.

DAILY POST reports that US President Donald Trump announced the military action on his Truth social media account.

“The Secretary-General is deeply alarmed by the recent escalation in Venezuela, culminating with today’s United States military action in the country, which has potentially worrying implications for the region.

“Independently of the situation in Venezuela, these developments constitute a dangerous precedent,” the statement said.
