Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Aliyu Modibbo, says the Northern Nigeria ceased to exist since the 1966 military coup.
Modibbo said this on Friday when he featured in an interview on Trust TV.
He was reacting to the state of the Northern Nigeria.
DAILY POST reports that the 1966 military coup which was the first of its kind claimed the lives of prominent Northern leaders including the first Prime Minister of Nigeria, Alhaji Tafawa Balewa, as well as the Alhaji Ahmadu Bello.
“I think the Northern part of Nigeria as we were told or knew ceased to exist since the 1966 coup. But we held onto that memory and fantasy that there is a monolithic North.
“The Sardauna and his colleagues of blessed memory pushed for our liberation and right in this federation. They safeguarded our rights and struggled for us to belong because at that time when the European colonizers came, They colonized us on different levels.
“For the North, particularly when you take the Hausa/Fulani North, the Caliphate North, we already had a system of government.
“Whoever read history in secondary school knows the concept of indirect rule. In the South, particularly the Southeast, they ruled them differently because they were mostly of different ethnic groups,” he said.
