The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has issued a public safety warning, urging Nigerians to stay away from fallen live electricity wires and electrocuted persons, warning that careless rescue attempts could lead to more deaths.
In a statement, the Commission stressed that electricity does not “play favourites”, noting that touching a live wire or an electrocuted person with bare hands can cause the electric current to pass through another person instantly.
NERC cautioned members of the public against acting on impulse during such incidents, explaining that what may seem like help could end up making the situation worse.
“Never touch a live wire or an active victim with your bare hands,” the Commission warned.
The regulator further advised witnesses to keep a safe distance and resist the urge to move victims on their own, as this could expose them to serious danger and turn them into additional casualties.
According to NERC, the safest action in such situations is to immediately alert trained professionals who are equipped to handle electricity-related emergencies.
“Immediately report the incident to your nearest DisCo,” the statement said.
The Commission explained that the advisory applies to cases where live wires are seen on the ground or when someone is being shocked, urging the public to prioritise personal safety and avoid unnecessary risks.
NERC said the warning is part of efforts to prevent avoidable injuries and deaths linked to electricity accidents, while encouraging Nigerians to remain alert and share safety information within their communities.
According to the Commission, maintaining composure, being well-informed, and exercising caution during electricity emergencies can be life-saving and contribute to the safety of neighborhoods.
