The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has alerted Nigerians over the recall of some Impala brand gel nail polish products following safety concerns linked to a harmful chemical substance found in the products.
NAFDAC disclosed that it received a notification from the Brazilian Health Regulatory Agency, Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária, ANVISA, announcing the recall of specific Impala gel nail polish products manufactured by Laboratório Avamiller de Cosméticos Ltd.
According to the agency, the recall became necessary after the discovery of Trimethylbenzoyl Diphenylphosphine Oxide, TPO, in the formulation of the affected products.
NAFDAC explained that TPO is prohibited for use in cosmetics, personal hygiene products, and perfumes in Brazil because of the health risks associated with the substance.
The agency stated that the chemical could cause allergic reactions and also poses carcinogenic and fertility-related risks to users.
“As a result, ANVISA has ordered the withdrawal of all affected batches from the Brazilian market,” the statement said.
The affected products were identified as Impala nail polish products manufactured by Laboratório Avamiller de Cosméticos Ltda.
NAFDAC listed the affected products to include:
• Plus, Gel Esmalte Impala Gel
• Esmalte Gel Impala Gel Plus
• Gel Plus Impala Esmalte Gel
• Esmalte Gel Plus Impala
• Topcoat Gel Impala Gel Plus Clear
The agency noted that although the recall was initiated in Brazil by the country’s regulatory authority, it is closely monitoring the development in Nigeria.
It added that necessary regulatory measures would be taken if any of the affected products are found within the Nigerian supply chain.
NAFDAC advised consumers who have any of the affected nail polish products to stop using them immediately and keep them away safely.
The agency also urged members of the public to report any adverse reactions linked to the products to the nearest NAFDAC office or through its e-reporting platforms on the agency’s website.
