The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old man suspected of belonging to the Eiye Confraternity after officers allegedly recovered a locally fabricated pistol and a live cartridge from him in the Ijaiye/Ojokoro area of the state.

The suspect, identified as Yusuf Lamina Adigun, was arrested during a routine stop-and-search operation, according to a statement issued on Saturday by the command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi.

Police said officers on patrol intercepted a motorcycle carrying three passengers and conducted a search on the occupants. During the exercise, a locally made pistol loaded with one live cartridge was allegedly found in Adigun’s possession.

The command said the suspect admitted during preliminary questioning that he was affiliated with the Eiye cult group. He also allegedly told investigators that he and other members of the group, who escaped arrest, were heading to attack some individuals before they were intercepted.

Adigun remains in police custody while investigations continue. The command said efforts were underway to track down the fleeing suspects and recover any additional weapons linked to the group.

Background

Cult-related violence remains a recurring security concern in parts of Lagos, with rival groups frequently linked to attacks, killings, armed robberies and disturbances in residential communities.

The police have intensified stop-and-search operations, intelligence gathering and targeted raids as part of efforts to disrupt cult networks and prevent planned attacks.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, said the command would continue to strengthen intelligence-led policing and proactive operations aimed at dismantling criminal groups across the state.

He also urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could help the police prevent crime and protect lives and property.

Why This Matters

The recovery of a loaded firearm during a routine patrol highlights the potential role of proactive policing in preventing planned violence. It also underscores continuing concerns about the circulation of locally fabricated weapons and the activities of suspected cult groups in Lagos communities.
