Team Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal successfully defended her Commonwealth Games title in dominant fashion, smashing records on her way to gold in the women’s 58kg weightlifting event, DAILY POST reports.

Lawal finished first with a combined total of 229kg, setting a new Commonwealth Games record and leaving the rest of the field trailing behind.

Canada’s Ann-Sophie Taschereau claimed silver with a total of 215kg, while India’s Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam finished third with 199kg.

It was Team Nigeria’s third gold medal in the weightlifting event.

Earlier on Monday, Edidiong Joseph Umoafia and Onome Didih claimed gold in the men’s 71kg and women’s 53kg events, respectively.
