Liverpool legend, Michael Owen, has cautioned Alexander Isak over his underwhelming performances for the Reds.

The Swedish international made a record £125 million transfer to Anfield last summer, yet he has not met the expectations he set during his time at Newcastle.

Isak was sidelined for a significant portion of the 2025/26 season, managing to score only four goals in 22 appearances across all competitions.

His first setback happened in December when he suffered a fractured leg. Subsequently, in May, Isak encountered a groin issue.

Now that he has fully overcome the injuries that hindered him last season, Owen hopes that Isak will play a major role in aiding Liverpool’s return to form.

The former England international expressed sympathy for Isak due to his injuries but emphasised that time is running out for the forward after observing his performance in the 2-2 draw against Newcastle.

Owen stated to talkSPORT, “I experienced numerous injuries throughout my career, so I understand how challenging it is to return, and it does require some time.

“We’ve given him time; everyone has given him time and understood that. But he’s finished the season, then he’s gone to the World Cup, and now he’s had a pre-season, and you just think OK, now we’re starting to run out of excuses.”

Owen said Isak must begin delivering the type of performances that justified Liverpool’s record investment to acquire him from Newcastle last summer.

The former footballer-turned-analyst also remarked that his old team urgently requires Isak to perform at his best following the departure of Mohamed Salah and the injury to Hugo Ekitike.
