Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, SpaceXAI sued over AI slowdown deal

Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and SpaceXAI are named in a new suit that alleges the companies entered into an illegal agreement to slow their individual AI development.

Filed on Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, the lawsuit says the tech giants violated antitrust laws when they agreed to coordinate abating efforts.

The litigation argues that decelerating the pace of artificial intelligence advancement would reduce the value consumers get for AI subscriptions.

According to the plaintiffs, who pay for ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, or Gemini, antitrust laws “do not permit competitors to decide among themselves that competition is too dangerous.”

Tech leaders Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and Demis Hassabis recently endorsed the suggestions contained in Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s essay, “We Must Pace the Frontier.”

But despite ongoing clamour and experts’ warnings about AI’s threat to humanity, President Donald Trump rejects calls to slow development, citing the race with China.

On Saturday, Trump announced he is forming an “AI Force,” declaring his administration will not “in any way hinder or stifle” the growth of the AI industry.

“AI is the next Industrial Revolution, or Internet, but will be even larger and more impactful,” the U.S. leader wrote on Truth Social.

The President again dismissed fears over AI, assuring that the government will remain vigilant through the existing Criminal and Civil Justice System.
