Taraba State government has intensified disease surveillance and announced plans to introduce fever screening at the state’s airport following reports of an Ebola case in Abuja.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Bordiya Gbansheya Buma disclosed this on Monday in Jalingo while outlining measures being taken by the state government to strengthen preparedness and prevent the possible spread of the disease.
“The government is working with the Federal Ministry of Health, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, and other relevant authorities to enhance disease surveillance and prepare healthcare facilities for possible cases,” Buma said.
He directed all public and private healthcare facilities across the state to remain vigilant and immediately report suspected Ebola cases to the Ministry of Health.
The commissioner also announced plans to train healthcare workers and intensify public awareness campaigns to educate residents on the symptoms, transmission and prevention of the disease.
He advised residents to watch out for symptoms such as fever, severe weakness, headache, vomiting and diarrhoea, urging anyone experiencing such symptoms after a possible exposure to seek prompt medical attention.
According to him, Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person who is showing symptoms.
Buma urged residents to maintain proper hand hygiene, avoid contact with the body fluids of suspected patients and promptly report suspected cases or possible exposure to health authorities.
He also cautioned the public against spreading rumours and misinformation or stigmatising individuals suspected of having the disease.
The commissioner called for public cooperation with health officials, particularly during contact-tracing exercises, as part of efforts to contain any potential outbreak.
While assuring residents of the state government’s preparedness, Buma appealed for calm and vigilance, urging the public to adhere strictly to official health advisories.
“Residents seeking health information or wishing to report suspected cases can contact the NCDC toll-free line on 6232, which operates 24 hours daily,” the commissioner said.
