In a historic move, the Lagos State House of Assembly has elected its first female speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I. This development follows the Change Of Leadership from the former Speaker Hon Mudashiru Obasa, who had been in the position since 2015.
Meranda’s emergence as speaker has been hailed as a significant milestone for women in politics. Hon. Mrs. Khairat Animashaun-Ajiboye, is the CEO of Khairat Animashaun-Ajiboye Foundation; Founder and Executive Director of Positive Dynamix, Peace and Development Initiative, a non governmental organization supporting young girls and helping the displaced and disadvantaged members of our communities, has congratulated Meranda on her new role. The former National Deputy Publicity Secretary of APC USA, praised Meranda’s achievement as a breakthrough for women in leadership positions.
Meranda, a Lagos indigene from a royal home, has been a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly for three consecutive legislatures, serving as the Chief Whip of the ninth house. Her experience and leadership skills make her an ideal candidate for the position of speaker.
This development is seen as a positive step towards greater representation and inclusivity in Lagos State’s governance. As Meranda begins her tenure as speaker, she is expected to play a key role in shaping the state’s legislative agenda and promoting the interests of Lagos State.
