The Managing Director of the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited, NIGCOMSAT Ltd., Mrs Jane Egerton-Idehen has noted the low reportage of issues around Satellite, Information and Communication Technology, are often under reported and misunderstood.
She described this as a major challenge in the sector, judging by how critical technology is to the existence of mankind.
Speaking at a training for ICT reporters in Abuja, Egerton-Idehen pointed out that satellites and ICT are now part of daily activities
“We live in a digital age where satellites and ICT are no longer abstract or futuristic, they are part of our daily life.
“Satellites power the internet in rural villages, help us predict the weather, support disaster response, and even strengthen national security.
“ICT, on the other hand, is the nervous system of our society, it drives communication, education, healthcare, commerce and governance.
“But here is the challenge: as critical as these technologies are, they are often under reported or misunderstood.
“Not because the media does not care, but because access to clear, foundational knowledge has not always been there. And that is why today matters.
“Nigeria is not just a consumer of technology; we are creators and contributors. Our satellites, our ICT infrastructure, and our vibrant startup ecosystem are proof of this.
“The ICT sector is one of the fastest growing in Africa, and with it comes huge potential. But for us to unlock that potential responsibly, we need strong, informed media voices.
“Remember: the future of Nigeria’s digital transformation is not only about engineers or policymakers. It also depends on how well you, the media, translate complex technology into everyday meaning for Nigerians.”
