Russia is preparing to roll out its cancer vaccine following the successful completion of preclinical trials, which proved both safety and high effectiveness.
Veronika Skvortsova, Director of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA) and former Minister of Health, made the announcement at the weekend.
Skvortsova, TASS reported, revealed that a rigorous research spanned several years, while the last three were dedicated to mandatory preclinical studies.
“The vaccine is now ready for use; we are awaiting official approval,” the official said at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), which ended in Vladivostok on Saturday.
The initial target for the vaccine will be colorectal cancer. During the trials, researchers detected significant reductions in tumor size, slowed tumor progression, and a high survival rate.
Additionally, Russian scientists have also made advancements in the creation of vaccines for glioblastoma and particular types of melanoma, including ocular melanoma.
However, speaking on the creation of bionic prostheses that was discussed at the EEF, Professor Skvortsova assured that neuroprosthetics would soon become reality.
The senior neurologist said that work on neuroprosthetics — biomedical devices that restore lost or impaired neural function — are in the stage of active development.
“We have passed the first stages,” Skvortsova told the Izvestia newspaper.
“An important step was the creation of biocompatible microelectrodes, which were implanted at the ends of peripheral nerve fibers — sensory and motor.”
