Palestinian state necessary to combat Hamas – Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that recognising Palestine as an independent state will help combat Hamas and bring much-needed peace to the region.

Macron, however, faulted United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio for describing the idea of a Palestinian state as “reckless.”

Speaking with CBS Face the Nation moderator Margaret Brennan, he noted that the objective of Hamas is “absolutely not to create a Palestinian state.”

According to the president, Hamas seeks to “destroy Israel” and persuade people that they have “no chance to have peace and stability.”

“If we want to stop this war, if we want to isolate Hamas, the recognition process and the peace plan is a precondition,” Macron said.

Macron is expected to present France’s position next week during the United Nations General Assembly high-level meetings in New York.

Canada, France, the United Kingdom and other US allies have expressed their intention to recognise a Palestinian state. China recently reaffirmed its support.

Meanwhile, the New York Declaration of July 2025, which endorsed a two-state solution, was formally adopted by the UN General Assembly earlier this month.
