The United States, US, has banned Iranian officials and diplomats at the United Nations, UN, General Assembly in New York from purchasing a wide range of goods.
The restrictions, described as “maximum pressure,” prevent Iranian officials from buying bulk household goods and luxury items like expensive watches.
Iranian diplomats are restricted from visiting popular stores such as Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s Wholesale Club.
Iranian officials must seek State Department permission to buy luxury goods, including items over $1,000 and vehicles over $60,000.
Disclosing these sanctions, the US State Department spokesman, Thomas Pigott, said luxury shopping would severely impact Iran’s economy, affecting imports and its ability to sell oil and other exports.
“We will not allow the Iranian regime to allow its clerical elites have a shopping spree in New York while the Iranian people endure poverty, crumbling infrastructure, and dire shortages of water and electricity,” Pigott said.
