The United Nations Security Council is concerned about reports of military reinforcements by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) around El Obeid in Sudan, months after the massacre in El Fasher.
The council, in a statement on Saturday, warned of the imminent risk of mass atrocities and demanded that the RSF immediately halt its assault on the city, capital of North Kordofan state.
The body further expressed serious worry over continued violence across Sudan, where the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF have been at war since mid-April 2023.
Urging all parties to end the hostility, the UNSC urged them to protect civilians and comply with international humanitarian law as well as the Jeddah Declaration commitments.
The council reminded the warring sides of the May 2023 agreement in Saudi Arabia, which upholds their obligations to facilitate the safe delivery of humanitarian aid and protect civilians, among others.
The members cited reports of RSF drone strikes in El Obeid and an increase in drone attacks across Sudan, and want all abuses and violations to be investigated and those responsible held accountable.
The UN advised member states to refrain from external interference that could exacerbate conflict and instability, and implement relevant Security Council resolutions, including resolution 2791 (2025).
Also on Saturday, the European Union drew global attention to the latest developments in Sudan, warning that “El Obeid must not become another El Fasher.”
The EU asked that the RSF end its attacks in El Obeid, saying the killing of civilians, the violence against ethnic groups, and the targeting of infrastructure must stop.
“Civilians must be allowed to leave freely and safely and humanitarian actors to have rapid, safe and unhindered access,” the statement added.
