Several Malian soldiers have reportedly been captured following a wave of coordinated attacks on military positions across the West African country, amid unconfirmed claims that a Russian military aircraft was brought down near Gao.
Security analyst Brant Philip, who shared updates on X on Saturday, said fighters linked to the Azawad Liberation Front, FLA, allegedly took Malian troops prisoner during clashes around Anefis.
Philip also cited unverified reports that a Russian Africa Corps Su-24 fighter aircraft crashed near Gao after it was allegedly struck by anti-aircraft fire close to Anefis. Smoke was reportedly seen rising from the Gao Air Base during the fighting.
Neither the Malian authorities nor the Russian government had officially confirmed the reported aircraft crash at the time of filing this report.
The Malian military, however, confirmed that armed groups attacked its positions in several locations, including Gao, Sévaré, Anefis, Aguelhok and Kenioroba. Independent reports also confirmed that multiple towns were targeted during Saturday’s offensive. (AP News)
Russian Africa Corps personnel were reportedly fighting alongside Malian forces to repel the attacks attributed to Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, JNIM, and the FLA.
