The United Kingdom is set to repatriate “illegal migrants and criminals” from three African countries after finally securing their governments’ commitment.
Namibia and Angola earlier agreed on returns after the threat of visa penalties, but the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) delayed coordination efforts since late 2025.
To pressure the DRC, Britain stripped its officials and other VIPs of preferential visa treatment and revoked fast-track visa processing services for all nationals.
The UK said the decision of the nations to take back their people proved the effectiveness of the visa ban threat and the reforms set out last November.
The government stated that countries that refuse to cooperate cannot expect a normal visa relationship. Further threats are expected against difficult countries.
“If foreign governments refuse to accept the return of their citizens, they will face consequences,” Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said, vowing to restore order and control to the borders.
More than 3,000 nationals from Angola, Namibia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo could be eligible for removal via scheduled transportation flights.
At least 58,500 people have been deported since the Labour Party came into power in July 2024, according to data released by the Home Office.
