Abuja, July 11, 2025 – The African Center for Governance, Asset Recovery and Sustainable Development has called on African leaders, institutions, and civil society to place human dignity and justice at the center of anti-corruption efforts, as the continent marks African Anti-Corruption Day 2025. In a press statement published on the official website of the organization, the CSO aligned its position with this year’s theme, “Promoting Human Dignity in the Fight Against Corruption,” describing corruption as a serious violation of fundamental rights and a barrier to equitable development.
“Corruption is not just a financial crime; it is a moral assault on the dignity of the African people. It undermines essential services, deepens poverty, and deprives citizens of the rights and opportunities they deserve. On this African Anti-Corruption Day, we reaffirm that our fight against corruption must center on human dignity, justice, and accountability.”
The Center stressed that its work is focused on asset recovery, transparency, and policy reform, all geared towards improving the quality of life for African citizens and restoring confidence in governance.
It further announced four key commitments:
- Advancing dignity-based asset recovery frameworks that return stolen wealth to communities and public development priorities.
- Empowering local actors, especially youth and women, to participate in decision-making and demand accountability.
- Protecting whistleblowers and victims of corruption;
- Strengthening cooperation with national and regional stakeholders on enforcement and people-centered policy reforms.
The African Center urged African governments to align their national anti-corruption strategies with the AU Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (AUCPCC) and relevant international human rights instruments, emphasizing that, recovered assets should not only be returned but also used to transform communities. They further pledge commitment to continually drive advocacy, public education, and stakeholder engagement across Africa and calls on partners to join the mission for a just, corruption-free continent.
