Lecturers at Imo State University, IMSU, have vowed that they will not evaluate or grade the scripts of students who participate in examinations conducted during the ongoing strike.

Chairperson of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, IMSU branch, Stephen Oguji, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Owerri on Saturday.

Oguji informed students currently undertaking examinations that the union is strongly committed to ensuring that they do not graduate through a process that lacks integrity.

He stated that the union condemns and rejects the administration of examinations amid an ongoing ASUU strike.

According to him, lecturers responsible for students’ instruction, assessment and grading are currently on strike. He stressed that the ongoing examinations are not designed by the lecturers and will not be graded or evaluated by them.

“We do not wish students to jeopardize their examinations. We do not want them to lose their academic session, most importantly, we do not want them to graduate through a process whose credibility may later be questioned,” he stated.

Oguji pointed out that true adversaries of the students are not their lecturers but rather those in positions of authority capable of resolving the issues that led to the strike.

He urged the students to join forces with the union in demanding that the Imo State Government to implement the Federal Government ASUU 2025 agreement regarding university funding.

“Dear Students, your true adversaries are not the lecturers. We are advocating for an educational system that functions effectively for you, for us and future generations.

“Therefore, instead of opposing your lecturers, join forces with us. Engage with those who possess the authority to resolve this crisis. Urge the government to implement the agreement and bring an end to the strike,” he added.

The IMSU ASUU chairperson maintained that lecturers are willing to go back to classrooms as they desire to see that examinations are conducted appropriately and students graduate with pride and legitimacy.

He appealed to concerned authorities to implement the agreement, which, according to him, is geared towards better working conditions for union members.
