Abuja, Nigeria — The political landscape in Kogi East shifted significantly on Saturday as the SDP Gubernatorial Candidate in the November 2023 Kogi election, Alhaji Yakubu Murtala Ajaka formally declared his intention to contest for the Senate, citing sustained pressure from stakeholders and a growing demand for purposeful representation.
Yakubu Muri, in a statement, said his decision followed months of extensive consultations and engagements with elders, youth groups, political associates, and concerned citizens across the senatorial district. He described the calls as overwhelming and consistent; all centered on the need to reposition Kogi East politically and ensure stronger representation at the National Assembly.
According to him, the defining moment came with the recent visit of a delegation of Kogi East elders, whose intervention he described as both symbolic and decisive.
“Their counsel, wisdom, and unity of purpose reinforced the responsibility we all share toward the progress and development of our land,” he said.
Responding to what he termed a collective call, Ajaka confirmed his entry into the race.
“I will, therefore, offer myself to serve as the Senator representing Kogi East Senatorial District,” he stated.
Beyond local politics, Ajaka framed his ambition within a broader national and party context, emphasizing the need to strengthen internal cohesion within the All Progressives Congress (APC) and consolidate support for the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Political observers say this positioning signals a dual strategy; local representation combined with national party alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“This decision is not just about representation,” he said. “It is also about intensifying our collective efforts to mobilize widespread support for President Tinubu’s administration, ensuring the successful delivery of his mandate and strengthening the path toward his re-election in 2027.”
He further disclosed that consultations are ongoing with critical stakeholders, including plans for deeper engagement with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, as part of efforts to build consensus. He assured constituents that his campaign would be anchored on inclusiveness, transparency, and continuous engagement with the people.
“As we move forward, I will continue to consult widely and ensure that every step reflects the collective will and best interest of Kogi East,” he said.
“Our people remain my foremost priority.”
With his declaration, analysts expect increased political activity and realignment within the district, as potential contenders and party stakeholders begin to reposition ahead of what is shaping up to be a closely watched senatorial race.
