Rights group, Initiative For Social Rights Concerns And Advancement, ISRCA, have raised alarm over the increase in house rent and exorbitant charges by house agents in Delta State.
ISRCA’s National Coordinator, Derrick Agberen, in a statement said things have gotten worse since after the public hearing on the proposed Landlord and Tenant law, 2025 at the Delta State House of Assembly in October 2025.
He said the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori led Delta State Government was yet to enact legislation, addressing the persistent issues surrounding house rent increments and exorbitant charges by house agents in the state.
According to the group,”A room, complete with a bathroom and kitchen, now costs ₦500,000, inclusive of caution fees, landlords’ drinks, and lawyer’s fees worth over ₦300,000, totalling over ₦800,000.
“Furthermore, two-bedroom and three-bedroom apartments are currently priced at ₦1,200,000 and ₦1,700,000, respectively, in certain areas, with additional exorbitant levies applied.”
The group said the State Government should take decisive actions in a timely manner regarding house rent increments by landlords and landladies within the State.
It insisted that the challenges were becoming increasingly alarming and pushing families to the extreme.
The group noted that, “The economic situation has not been fair enough to families, especially ordinary citizens, where the basic needs for survival have been major challenges for many families to deal with.
“The Delta State Government should not remain silent for too long in the face of this abnormality by housing agents, landlords, and landladies.
“While issues of transportation, food, goods, and services have been on the rise, the people cannot contend with these issues in addition to the rising cost of housing.
“While many homeowners would also argue about the cost of materials to build homes, the Delta State Government should consider investing more in housing schemes as a means to slash housing costs in locations across the state.”
