Women’s groups in Jigawa State have called for increased female participation in politics, urging political parties to ensure equal representation of women in elective and appointive positions ahead of the 2027 general election.
The State Coordinator, Danmodi Mata Zalla Hajiya Maryam Muhammed Abubakar, made the call while speaking during events to honour four appointees in Gumel Local Government, organised by the Lautai Progressive Citizens on Thursday.
She expressed concern over the low participation of women in politics in Jigawa State, despite government efforts to ensure full representation of women in all its policies and programmes.
According to her, “Danmodi/Tinubu Mata Zalla was introduced to enlighten women to fully participate in political activities and contest for any elective positions in the coming elections.
“About 65 to 70 per cent of all votes come from us; we are the majority, so I see no reason why we cannot contest and win any position.
“This is a golden opportunity for us women, especially in Jigawa State, to contest any position; we will support you, and Governor Namadi also will also support you.”
Abubakar also commended Governor Umar Namadi for his efforts to ensure 30 per cent women inclusion in political appointments and policies, including free girls’ education and women’s empowerment initiatives aimed at making them self-reliant.
“I am also using this opportunity to thank the governor on behalf of the women in the state and also call for more women’s inclusion and consideration,” she said.
Speaking earlier, the chairman of the Lautai Progressive Citizens Forum, Alhaji Aminu Haruna, explained that the event was organised to celebrate and congratulate some of the Lautai indigenes who had been appointed to different positions at federal and state government levels.
He commended President Bola Ahmad Tinubu and Governor Umar Namadi for their exemplary leadership and also assured the forum’s commitment to reciprocate the gesture by mobilising more support ahead of the 2027 general election.
During the event, the forum also welcomed over 2,000 opposition members from the ADC, PDP and NNPP who joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
