The 10th Senate will resume plenary on October 7, with lawmakers expected to consider key national issues, including the long-debated matter of local government autonomy.
Jackson Udom, Special Assistant on Media to the Senate President, said this in a statement on Sunday while outlining areas that will top the agenda as plenary resumes.
According to him, lawmakers will also focus on the 2026 Appropriation Bill, electoral reforms, constitution review, security, and economic growth.
“Part of what is expected when plenary resumes is that lawmakers will give legislative backing to the Supreme Court judgement on local government autonomy. This will ensure both administrative and financial independence for councils across the country,” Udom said.
He explained that despite the landmark ruling, governors were still controlling funds meant for councils through joint accounts.
Udom also noted that the 2026 Appropriation Bill to be submitted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu before the end of the year will be a priority for the Senate.
“The budget is expected to address challenges like inflation, unemployment, and insecurity,” he added.
Other issues expected on the agenda include constitutional amendments, electoral reforms, and measures to strengthen national security and peace.
According to him, the 10th Senate and its leadership has emphasized the importance of legislative oversight in ensuring accountability and transparency in governance.
