Members of the Niger State House of Assembly have passed a bill extending the retirement age of academic staff in state-owned institutions.
Under the new bill, the retirement age for general academic staff has been increased from 65 to 70 years, while professorial cadre staff will now retire at 75 years instead of 70.
The bill was adopted following the presentation of a report by the chairman of the Standing Committee on Education, Hon. Mohammed Sani Idris, representing Tafa constituency.
He explained that the move aligns with national standards, retains experienced academic staff, and improves education quality.
The House also resolved to summon the commissioner and permanent secretary of the Ministry of Works to explain their failure to implement earlier directives on road safety measures.
This follows the presentation of a report by the chairman of the House Standing Committee on Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Abubakar Suleiman Gomna, representing Bosso constituency.
The lawmaker maintained that the move underscores the House’s commitment to citizen safety and infrastructure improvement.
