A Nigerian-born public official, Nwachinemere Kalu-Agba, has been re-elected as the Deputy Mayor (Mayor Pro Tem) of the City of Orangeburg, South Carolina, United States, for another two-year term ending in 2027.
His re-election was announced on Sunday in a Facebook post by Peter Agba Kalu, who congratulated him and called for public celebration.
Kalu-Agba, who also serves as a City Council representative for his district, previously held the Deputy Mayor position before stepping down in accordance with a new state law, which stipulates a two-year tenure for the Mayor Pro Tem, after which a new official must be elected.
The law also bars immediate re-election until after another cycle, allowing former holders to contest again if they choose.
He returned to the position after the tenure of his successor elapsed and will continue to serve concurrently as both Deputy Mayor and council member.
His current four-year city council mandate is expected to lapse in 2027, when he may decide whether to seek re-election.
