The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Abia State chapter, on Tuesday stormed the Abia State House of Assembly in Umuahia to protest the alleged intimidation of members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN, in the Assembly.
Led by the Chairman of NLC in Abia State, Okoro Ogbonnaya, the union condemned the alleged actions of some Abia legislators in destroying the padlocks and chains used to secure the Assembly during the ongoing PASAN strike.
The NLC demanded that the Abia State House of Assembly should compensate for the chain and padlocks allegedly destroyed by the lawmakers last week.
The Abia NLC Chairman said that the national office of the NLC had sent details of the property allegedly destroyed by the legislators.
“The actions, which he said were not supposed to be associated with lawmakers. It is wrong to threaten and intimidate PASAN members who are NLC members and were only exercising their legitimate rights as workers,” Okoro said.
According to him, the demands by PASAN had lingered for too long and should be addressed, adding that their salary structure should not be excessively costly.
Responding on behalf of other lawmakers, the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa, assured that ongoing negotiations on the conflict would certainly yield positive results by 2026.
Ogbonnaya said organised labour expects that the implementation of the salary structure for PASAN will begin with the January 2026 salary.
Also, the Abia State chairman of PASAN, Sunday Ndukwe, and the national Vice Chairman, Chijioke Onwukwe, said they look forward to the conclusion of the negotiations in order to receive their due wages.
