Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has declared that the state government has engaged members of Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN) also known as Amotekun and other security agencies to protect staff and students of Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan.
Makinde made this declaration while speaking at the 2024/2025 convocation ceremonies of the university on Saturday.
The event was attended by the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Adesola Ajayi, top government functionaries, principal officers of the institution among others.
DAILY POST reports that the university is one of the tertiary educational institutions owned by the Oyo State government.
Makinde said that the state government understandd the peculiarity of the location of the institution and has engaged security agencies to tackle any form of security challenges in the institution.
He added that the state has established an Amotekun base at the entrance of the institution to forestall any form of security breach in the institution.
Makinde who was represented by his Deputy, Adebayo Lawal maintained that the university just like all other institutions is facing some challenges such especially in the areas of funding and infrastructure.
He said other measures being taken to tackle insecurity in the area was the erection of perimeter fencing around the institution.
Makinde said, “Security and Campus Safety: We have strengthened campus security through collaborations with Amotekun and other agencies to guarantee safe learning environments.
“Like many universities across Nigeria, Tech-U faces significant challenges, especially in funding and infrastructure. I assure you that this administration remains committed to offering the critical support needed to realize the unique vision of this University.
“To ensure that no intruder comes to this university. To ensure that the campus is safe. We will ensure that we reduce the level of vandalism. Abiola Ajimobi Technical University is a pride to Oyo State government and we will continue to strengthen it.
“Our interventions so far include: Sustaining the ALGON Scholarship Programme. Allocating one of the new Primary Health Centres to serve the University community, Commencing the rehabilitation of internal roads within the campus; Enhancing campus security through expanded perimeter fencing; Establishing an Amotekun Security Base at the University entrance, with routine internal patrols; Achieving a significant reduction in theft and property vandalism on campus, as confirmed by security reports”.
