Driver of a Nissan Jeep with registration number KJA 354 ET has been arrested after allegedly knocking down a pedestrian and attempting to flee the scene at Ogudu Flyover Bridge, inward Ifako, Lagos.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the driver, instead of assisting the victim, made a desperate attempt to escape.

According to him, the accident occurred while the motorist was trying to outmanoeuvre a heavily loaded articulated truck, during which he lost control and rammed into the unsuspecting pedestrian.

The case was reported to have taken place on Sunday morning. LASTMA operatives stationed around the axis swiftly intercepted the fleeing driver and facilitated the emergency rescue of the victim, who was rushed for urgent medical care.

“Unfortunately, despite the immediate intervention, the pedestrian later succumbed to his injuries,” Bakare-Oki stated.

Bakare-Oki disclosed that the driver was handed over to officers of the Ogudu Police Division, while the badly damaged vehicle was towed to the station for investigation.

The LASTMA boss cautioned motorists against reckless driving, speeding, and dangerous manoeuvres, warning that such behaviour poses grave risks not only to drivers but also to pedestrians and other innocent road users.
