The Oyo State Police Command has arrested 11 students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, over their alleged involvement in cult-related activities.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Ibadan.
According to the statement, the suspects are alleged members of the Eiye Confraternity who had gathered at a hideout within the Under-G, Yuako and Adenike areas of Ogbomoso.
Ayanlade said the group was reportedly planning coordinated attacks within the university’s student community before operatives of the command’s Violent Crime Response Unit intervened.
He explained that the operation followed credible intelligence received by the police concerning the planned attack, which could have caused widespread unrest in and around the institution.
Items recovered from the suspects included four locally fabricated cut-to-size pistols, 11 live cartridges, one expended cartridge, two cult axes, one cutlass, one dagger and a red cult hooded cap.
The police spokesperson said the suspects were taken into custody while investigations continued into the alleged cult activities and planned attack.
