Former federal lawmaker Senator Shehu Sani has called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, and the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, to clarify the N7 trillion reportedly paid as subsidies in 2024.
The NNPCL, in its financial statement for the year ended December 2024, revealed that N7.1 trillion was spent on fuel subsidy to defray energy costs.
According to a report by an online medium, the expense was tagged “energy security expense”.
Reacting, Shehu Sani, in a post on X, called for an explanation, noting that fuel subsidy ended in 2023.
He wrote, “The NNPCL and Finance Minister should explain on the report that over N7 trillion was paid as subsidies in 2024.
“We knew that subsidy died in 2023 and was buried, if it has resurrected or it’s a ghost guzzling our trillions, we need to know.”
