The Nigeria Police Force has clarified reports surrounding the alleged re-arrest of human rights activist Omoyele Sowore.

Earlier reports had suggested that Sowore, who was arrested for organising the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest but granted bail on Friday, was re-arrested within the courtroom shortly after his release.

However, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, dismissed the claims as false, explaining that if the activist had indeed been re-arrested, he would not have been taken directly to prison.

“Story that he was arrested on a fresh charge and whisked away to Kuje Prison to be arranged on Monday is procedurally incorrect. A person arrested on a fresh charge cannot be taken straight to prison. No prison will accept such a person without a remand warrant duly issued by a competent court,” Leadership quoted the Force PRO as saying.

Hundeyin further clarified that Sowore was taken to prison only in compliance with the court’s directive to perfect his bail conditions.

“He was taken to prison as instructed on the attached remand warrant pending when he meets his bail conditions, nothing more,” he said.
