Two pedestrians have been injured following a road traffic accident involving a heavy-duty truck conveying Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and a private vehicle at Apakun Bridge, inward Oshodi, Lagos State.
The incident occurred at the crest of the bridge when the truck reportedly rammed into a moving silver Toyota Corolla, triggering a chain reaction that led to the pedestrians being struck.
According to preliminary reports, the truck, with registration number EKY 120 YK, was allegedly driven at excessive speed before colliding with the Toyota Corolla, EKY 289 HM, at the strategic Apakun Bridge corridor.
Officials said the impact caused severe disruption to traffic flow in the area and posed significant danger to other road users. In the aftermath of the collision, two pedestrians sustained injuries, while the driver of the Toyota Corolla was said to have suffered serious injuries.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that its officers swiftly mobilised to the scene and carried out a coordinated rescue operation.
“LASTMA officers promptly arrived at the scene and successfully rescued the injured victims from the wreckage,” the agency said.
“The affected pedestrians and the injured driver were immediately transported to a nearby medical facility, where they are currently receiving medical attention.”
Security support was provided by operatives of the Ajao Estate Police Division to ensure safety and prevent further incidents during the rescue and evacuation process.
Due to the highly flammable nature of the truck’s cargo, personnel of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were also deployed to the scene as a precautionary measure.
Reacting to the incident, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, condemned what he described as the growing trend of reckless overspeeding by truck and tanker operators across the state.
Giwa warned that the Lagos State Government would no longer tolerate driving practices that endanger lives, stressing that violators would face the full wrath of the law.
He urged operators of articulated vehicles to strictly adhere to speed limits and traffic regulations, while praying for the speedy recovery of the injured victims.
