The Progressives Think-Tank, a political and policy advocacy group, has commended the Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP, for achieving over N1 trillion in savings within a single budget cycle through enhanced price intelligence and benchmarking mechanisms.
In a statement made available to journalists, the group described the achievement as a landmark in Nigeria’s public finance management and one of the most significant procurement reforms recorded on the African continent.
According to the think-tank, the savings represent the highest in the history of the bureau and exceed the cumulative amount recorded between 2007 and 2024.
The statement, signed by the Acting National Coordinator, Ms Christiana Titus, praised the BPP for its commitment to transparency, efficiency and fiscal discipline, noting that the milestone reflects the impact of strengthened procurement oversight across Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs.
The group attributed the savings to improved contract management, data-driven price intelligence, effective benchmarking, and stricter monitoring of procurement processes, which it said have reduced waste and ensured better value for public funds.
The think-tank also commended the leadership of the Director-General of BPP, Dr Adebowale Adedokun, describing his appointment as well-suited to the demands of the Bureau.
It noted that the reforms achieved under his leadership underscored the importance of competence and professionalism in driving institutional performance.
Calling for broader recognition of the achievement, the group said the BPP deserves consideration for the Guinness World Records, describing the savings as unprecedented in public procurement practice.
The Progressives Think-Tank further urged the Federal Government to sustain the reforms through consistent oversight and the institutionalisation of best practices to ensure transparency and accountability in public spending.
The group added that the procurement reforms align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Nigeria First Policy, which prioritises local content development, economic growth and job creation, stressing that effective procurement processes remain critical to national development.
It called on stakeholders, including civil society, the media and the private sector, to support ongoing efforts aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s procurement system and safeguarding public resources.
