ABUJA— The Council Chairman of the University of Abuja, Senator Olarenwaju Tejusho, is under fire over allegations of fraudulent appointment and abuse of office for allegedly attempting to impose Mr. Alkassim Umar as the Substantive Registrar of the institution.

The allegation was contained in a report made available to SaharaReports, and referenced a petition dated Monday, June 8, 2026 submitted to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, by A Broom for Every Home Initiative, BEH.

According to the report, Senator Tejusho has served as Council Chairman since *March 2025*. The group now alleges that the Council Chairman is repeating the same pattern by pushing for the appointment of Mr. Alkassim Umar as Substantive Registrar, despite questions over his qualification and record in office.

“The selection of Alkassim Umar can only be connected to his corrupt nature,” the report stated. BEH further described the Council Chairman’s actions as part of “a lot of corrupt practices” within the period, particularly around university admissions.

In the June 8 petition to ICPC, BEH raised concerns about Mr. Umar’s tenure as Establishment Officer of UniAbuja between 2021 and 2024.

While the petition detailed allegations of diversion of Remita funds and illicit enrichment, BEH is using it as a basis to argue that Mr. Alkassim Umar cannot be appointed as the Substantive Registrar of UniAbuja because he is not qualified and his record in office is already a subject of anti-graft investigation.

The NGO prayed ICPC to investigate his financial activities, asset declaration, and overall suitability for any principal position in the University.

The petition was signed by Prince Babatunde Kolawlole, President of BEH, who stated: _“Allowing this alleged fraud to go unpunished will further erode confidence in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions and the Remita/TSA framework.”_

The University of Abuja has faced increased public scrutiny in recent months over governance, appointments, and admission processes.

As at press time, Senator Tejusho and University Management had not issued an official response to the allegations.
ICPC confirmed receipt of petitions but noted that it does not comment on ongoing investigations.
