The chairman of the Yobe State House of Assembly Standing Committee on Health, Kachalla Ajiya Maina, has expressed concern over reports of unprofessional behaviour exhibited by some health practitioners in public health facilities across the state.

The lawmaker raised the concern on Tuesday during the 2026 budget defence session for the Ministry of Health and its agencies before the committee.

Maina described the growing complaints from patients and their relatives, especially at the State Specialist Hospital, Damaturu, regarding neglect, harassment, and other misconduct by some health workers, as worrisome and unacceptable.

The chairman called on the Hospital Management Board to investigate the series of complaints and ensure disciplinary action is taken against erring personnel.

The Executive Secretary of the Yobe State Hospital Management Board, Dr Abubakar Yerima, assured the committee that the board will thoroughly examine the matter and provide a lasting and proper solution.

He noted that bad behaviour in the health profession contradicts medical professional ethics, adding that the board will not allow a few individuals with ingrained bad habits to tarnish the image of the medical profession.

Dr Yerima further stated that, henceforth, the agency, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, will ensure that any undisciplined health practitioner is not employed in any health facility in the state, as a preventive measure to address the problem at its source.
