The Simon Ekpa-led Biafra Republic Government in Exile has rallied United States of American lawmakers in Washington to pause sales of arms to Nigeria.
It made the appeal through its Acting Prime Minister, Ogechukwu Nkere, citing alleged rights abuse.
DAILY POST reports that the two major Biafra activists, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and Simon Ekpa are currently in detention.
While Ekpa has been convicted in Finland, Kanu is undergoing trial at a Federal High Court in Abuja.
In a statement on Monday, Nkere claimed that in the first half of September 2025, he met with Congressman Brian Mast (Republican, Florida), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, and Congresswoman Lamonica McIver (Democrat-New Jersey), with a motive to seek end to arms sale to Nigeria.
He said the request became necessary following alleged human rights abuses in the South East Region, including the detention of Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, by the Nigerian Government.
Nkere further stressed that he sought the advice of the lawmakers on what could be done by the US government in addressing what he called Finland’s persecution and conviction of Ekpa.
He said following Ekpa’s detention, he assumed the active management of the BRGIE.
“In addition, I met with Ambassador Tibor Nagy, longtime senior State Department official and diplomat with extensive postings in Africa.
“In the meetings, I encouraged U.S. strategic engagement with BRGIE on the Biafra issue, as well as encouraging the US Congress to pause arms sales to Nigeria”, he stated.
He highlighted human rights abuses against Biafrans, including the manner of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s rendition to Nigeria and recommended that the US secure his release.
Nkere also sought the US government’s support in addressing what he called Finland’s “persecution and conviction of Simon Ekpa”.
