The Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to expanding its force structure and strengthening operational capabilities to address emerging security challenges across the country.

Colonel Appolonia Anele, acting Director, Army Public Relations, in a statement said the COAS gave the assurance on Thursday, November 5, 2026, during a courtesy visit to the governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, at Government House, Benin City.

A major highlight of the visit was the COAS’s assurance that the newly established 83 Division, with Headquarters in Benin City, would soon become operational.

He explained that the division forms part of the Nigerian Army’s ongoing expansion from eight to 12 divisions, aimed at strengthening military presence, improving command and control and enhancing rapid response to security threats across the country, particularly in Edo State and the wider South-South region.
