A group of technology and economic experts on Wednesday in Abuja canvassed for the deployment of technology and Artificial Intelligence, AI, in Nigeria’s current struggle for economic diversification and general development.
Specifically, they called for the adoption of Artificial intelligence to enhance Nigeria’s growth in the fourth global industrial revolution.
At a one-day lecture organized by the Economic Confidential, the experts identified AI as a key factor to be embraced to transform Nigeria’s economy into a prosperous one.
Among the experts are the Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, Dr Kashifu Inuwa, who was the keynote speaker, Dr Tope Fasua, Special Adviser to the President on Economic Matters, and Dr Afolabi Olajunwon of the Budget Office of the Federation.
The NITDA DG in his contribution declared that the digital economy, using AI, has the potential of driving Nigeria’s economy up to 20 percent GDP.
In his keynote address, the NITDA chief declared that the digital economy has the potential to drive 20 per cent GDP growth, if strategically harnessed.
He emphasized that artificial intelligence is no longer optional but essential, adding “Those who fail to upskill will be replaced. AI can free up 20 per cent of time for higher productivity. Nations leading in AI will lead the world.”
Inuwa added that Nigeria cannot afford to miss the 4th Industrial Revolution, after losing out in the first three revolutions.
He revealed ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Education to build digital literacy into Nigeria’s educational system national curriculum and with the Office of Head of Service of the Federation to enhance civil service training .
“Market women can now connect with customers through mobile technology. But as we connect, we must also protect and cybersecurity is a critical pillar.”
In his own contribution, the President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, NIPR, who spoke through Dr. Afolabi Olujuwon of the Budget Office of the Federation, warned that any nation, especially in Africa, that fails to embrace the digital revolution will be left behind in global development.
He stated that Nigeria, as a large country in Africa, must not only adopt technology but must become exporters to lead Africa in the 4th industrial revolution.
According to him, Nigeria at the moment is blessed with abundant talents but needs to imbibe the spirit of motivation to harness technology, not as a consumer but as a creator and exporter of technology.
He pleaded with Nigerian leaders to ensure that the country join forces with international policies makers to chart a new path to a prosperous nation.
Also speaking, Special Adviser to the President on Economy in the Office of the Vice President, Dr Tope Fasua, represented by Aremu Olayinka Elijah, reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to recalibrating Nigeria’s economy.
He emphasized that rebased economic data confirms measurable progress, noting that “we are shifting from traditional models to a tech-driven future.” The service sector, he said, is proving to be a “tremendous equalizer” in the new economy.
Highlight of the event was the launch of three groundbreaking books by young journalists: Renewed Hope in Central Banking by Rahman Oladosu; Healing Nigeria: Chronicle of Health by Lawal Mamman and Maimuna Aliyu, and Diplomacy and Digital Innovation: Youth Insight, by Fatimah Usman
Earlier, the organiser, Yushau A. Shuaib, CEO of Nigeria Economic Confidential, noted that the books are critical tools for evidence-based policy and decision-making.
