PRESS STATEMENT

SERDEC Condemns Extra-Judicial Killing, Commends IGP for Swift Response

The Socio-Economic Research and Development Centre (SERDEC) strongly condemns the tragic extra-judicial killing of a young Nigerian citizen, allegedly shot while in handcuffs by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State.

This disturbing incident underscores the persistent challenges of abuse of power, disregard for due process, and violations of fundamental human rights within segments of the nation’s law enforcement system.

No citizen should lose their life under such unlawful and inhumane circumstances—particularly while already restrained and in custody.

SERDEC commends the Inspector-General of Police for the swift arrest of the officer involved and the prompt initiation of disciplinary and criminal proceedings. Such decisive action is critical to restoring public confidence and reinforcing the principle that no individual is above the law.

However, accountability must extend beyond arrest. We call for a transparent, thorough, and expedited prosecution of all individuals found culpable. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.

In addition, SERDEC urges the Nigeria Police Force to implement sustained institutional reforms aimed at preventing future occurrences. These should include:

  • Regular conduct and ethics reviews for officers
  • Mandatory annual human rights training for all personnel
  • Strengthened psychological evaluation and firearm responsibility protocols
  • Enhanced internal accountability systems and accessible civilian complaint mechanisms

The protection of lives and property remains the fundamental mandate of the police. Any officer who weaponizes that authority against citizens violates their oath and erodes public trust.

SERDEC stands in solidarity with victims of police brutality and reiterates that justice, professionalism, and respect for human dignity must remain the foundation of policing in Nigeria.
