The Socio Economic Research and Development Centre, SERDEC has condemn in strong term the display of legislative autocracy by the Senate President Godswill Akpabio following the drama that occurred with Senator Natasha Akpoti, Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial Zone.
The Executive Director, Mr Tijani Abdulkareem noted that in a democracy the legislative arm of government is critical to showcasing democratic values of inclusion and tolerance for democratic sustenance and can not be found wanting, displaying dictatorial attributes through undemocratic statements and actions that in-dignifies a fellow colleague as seen in the trending video which further ridiculed the senate thereby justifying the growing perception that the senate under Mr. Akpabio’s leadership has been rigged with a lack of independence, disregard for constitutionality and rule of law.
Mr Tijani noted that Nigerians yearn for a senate that is accountable and responsive to their needs, but when representatives elected are denied their elected right to present their constituency submission at plenary with a lack of insensitivity and display of tyranny as captured in the trending video, it portend danger for the future of our democracy.
Mr. Tijani further advise the Senate President to be more tolerable and diplomatic as a leader and understand the gender and personality dynamics in leadership while urging the 10th Senate to drop the dramas and be more focus in rolling out policies to addressing the daunting challenges faced by citizens while channeling such energy as displayed in the video into enacting laws that will rescue the country from the current socio-economic crisis that have left many household in abject poverty.
