The Odua People’s Assembly, OPA, has pleaded with the international community to take a firm stance on individuals and groups undermining Nigeria’s democracy.

The group also asked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Chief Nyesom Wike, to allow the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to position itself as the main opposition party in the country.

The OPA said the actions of the former Rivers State governor is further worsening the crisis in the PDP.

In a statement on Friday, the OPA Chairman, Richard Olatunji Kayode, lamented what they see as the growing pattern of political interference and destabilization allegedly orchestrated by Wike.

The group said that the internal conflicts rocking the PDP has been heightened by the Minister’s alignment with factions opposed to the PDP’s leadership.

Kayode also pointed out that Wike’s political fight with his godson, Siminalayi Fubara is one that should have been avoided for the sake of peace.

“The ramifications of Wike’s actions extend beyond personal ambition; they infiltrate the very fabric of the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP,” he added.

The OPA accused Wike of helping to erode the peace in the PDP by aligning himself with factions that oppose the party’s leadership.

“This internal strife is detrimental, as it undermines the effectiveness of the party and, by extension, the democratic process in Nigeria,” OPA added.

The OPA also called on the FCT minister to allow the other opposition parties strive, insisting that Nigeria’s democracy must be destabilized by a single politician.

“It is imperative for the international community to recognize that such behavior transcends local concerns; it is a direct threat to the democratic foundations upon which our nation stands,” they added.

“The time has come for the global community to take a firm stance against the forces that seek to undermine our democracy.

“The Odua People’s Assembly stands resolute in our commitment to democracy and the rights of the people.

“Together, we can ensure that the voices of the people are heard and that democracy in Rivers State and Nigeria is preserved.”
