Remain of a 15-year-old boy, Sunusi Abubakar was found in Mahayin gidan Toro pond in Gabari village, of Dutse Local Government, Jigawa state.

The deceased’s father, Abubakar Musa Gabari, revealed that the incident happened after the boy went to swim in the pond at about 17:00 hours, but failed to return home.

He said a search team was mobilized by the community and security agencies until the body was eventually discovered.

Spokesman of the JIgawa State NSCDC command, ASC. Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud confirmed the incident in a statement issued to DAILY POST.

According to him “At about 09:00 hours today, Wednesday 1st October 2025, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Jigawa State Command, confirmed the death of 15-year-old boy, Sunusi Abubakar, from Gabari village of Chamo District, who was discovered lifeless inside a pond locally referred to as ‘Mahayin gidan Toro’, located about 1.5 kilometers to the north of Gabari village.”

He said prior to the discovery, the shoes and trousers of the deceased were seen abandoned by the river bank on 30th September, 2025.

Mr. Badruddeen noted that the body of the deceased showed no trace of injury and was handed over to his parents for burial, which was conducted in accordance with Islamic rites.

The NSCDC appealed to parents, guardians, and community leaders to warn children and youths against unsafe swimming practices in open water bodies in order to avert future occurrences of that nature.
